Jeff brings a unique blend of creativity and experience to his clients’ cases. As a federal law clerk, Jeff learned firsthand from “behind the bench” which arguments were persuasive to judges and juries. As a trial lawyer, he brings that insight to every case. Jeff understands that the successful resolution of any dispute requires keen discernment to establish a successful and adaptable strategy from the outset and steadfast dedication to maximize chances of success at every stage.

In recent years, Jeff has navigated the complexities of high-stakes litigation, securing favorable results as lead counsel in successfully defending a hospice company from a predatory lawsuit by a competitor, arguing an appeal which resulted in a dismissal of the case and an award of attorneys’ fees in his client’s favor. As co-lead counsel, Jeff helped obtain a significant recovery in a subrogation matter arising from a high-profile oil spill involving global companies and some of the most prestigious litigation firms in the nation. As part of the trial team, Jeff helped try a multi-million-dollar products liability case to a jury verdict.

Jeff’s practice spans a broad array of commercial matters, including oil and gas, insurance coverage and subrogation, pollution, products liability, partnership, professional responsibility, fiduciary duty, defamation, construction, and contract disputes. He represents clients before juries, judges and arbitrators, in both state and federal courts and domestic and international arbitrations. In addition to his trial work, Jeff has appeared before federal and state courts of appeals.

Born and raised in Texas, Jeff also lived in Boston, Scotland and Latvia before returning to Texas to pursue his legal career. After graduating from the University of Houston Law Center, he clerked for Chief Judge Thad Heartfield of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Jeff practiced complex commercial litigation for five years at a litigation boutique in Houston prior to joining Hall Maines Lugrin.

Cases & Experience
  • Defended a hospice company against a suit from a competitor alleging conspiracy to breach fiduciary duties. Jeff managed the trial strategy and briefed and argued the appeal that resulted in the case being dismissed and an award of attorneys’ fees in his client’s favor. Crossroads Hospice, Inc. v. FC Compassus, LCC, 606 S.W.3d 294 (Tex.App—Houston [1st. Dist.] 2020).
  • Represented the insurance company of an oil and gas company whose pipeline was damaged by container ships resulting in an oil spill. Responsibilities included assisting with the management of the cleanup on the ground at the Coast Guard Unified Command immediately after the spill, recovering a favorable result as co-lead counsel in subrogation litigation against the vessels, and assisting with the company’s Natural Resource Damage Assessment with state and federal governments.
  • Part of trial team in a multi-million-dollar products liability case which was tried to a jury verdict. Responsibilities included both presenting and cross-examining trial witnesses and briefing and arguing trial motions to the court.
  • Secured a favorable recovery representing a large supplier of industrial gases in lawsuits in both state and federal court involving tens of millions of dollars in complicated regulatory charges arising from electricity charges associated with Winter Storm Uri.
  • Successfully defended a research physician at a prestigious medical school against a defamation claim arising from a publication in a medical journal. Obtained a take nothing judgment and dismissal of the case.
  • Second chair in a jury trial representing the defendant manufacturer of seasonal items against the plaintiff retailer purchaser of those items. In addition to both parties’ breach of contract claims, the case also involved causes of action for declaratory judgment, defamation and tortious interference with prospective contracts. Following a three-day jury trial, the jury returned a verdict awarding our client contract damages and attorneys’ fees in addition to denying all of plaintiff retailer’s causes of actions, which was upheld on appeal. Garden Ridge, L.P. v. Advance Intern., Inc., 403 S.W.3d 432 (Tex.App.—Houston [14th Dist.] 2013).
  • Represented an engineering firm in a professional liability claim. Argued the case on appeal and obtained a dismissal of the firm in the trial court. Engineering and Terminal Services, LP v. TARSCO, Inc., 525 S.W.3d 394 (Tex.App.—Houston [14th Dist.] 2017). Following the appeal, the Texas legislature amended the certificate of merit statute to conform with Jeff’s arguments on appeal.
  • On trial team in a jury trial representing the defendant oil and gas exploration company against the plaintiff oil and gas engineering consulting firm. Plaintiff alleged that defendant agreed to enter into a partnership to manage oil and gas projects with the plaintiff after the plaintiff introduced defendant to a financing source. In addition to breach of contract, the plaintiff also advanced causes of action of fraud, breach of fiduciary duty and quantum meruit seeking several million dollars in damages. After a six-day jury trial, the jury returned a defense verdict resulting in the entry of a take-nothing judgment in favor of our client.
  • On trial team in a commercial arbitration representing the primary limited partner in a dispute over the allocation of partnership assets following that partnership’s dissolution. Following three days of evidentiary hearings, the arbitrator rendered a decision granting our client all relief requested.
  • Represented a partner of a national law firm in a professional negligence matter. Developed discovery and briefed summary judgment motions leading to a favorable settlement.
  • Developed and successfully briefed a threshold legal issue that prompted a favorable settlement of a multi-million-dollar blowout case on behalf of an oilfield engineering services company.
  • Part of litigation team representing an oil and gas well operator in a multi-million dollar subrogation blowout case. Successfully briefed and responded to summary judgment motions in Louisiana state court leading to a favorable settlement.
  • Lead associate representing the manufacturer of a heavy-duty tire changing tool in a wrongful death case in federal court arising out of the explosion of a tire. Developed factual proof exonerating the client resulting in its dismissal from the case.
  • Represented pro-bono a disabled single mother wrongfully accused of theft by a former friend. Obtained a take-nothing judgment and dismissal of case.
  • Represented pro bono a victim of domestic abuse in a divorce case and obtained post-divorce spousal support obligations rarely granted by Texas courts.
